In organizations, it often costs you the best idea or the person who could change everything. Years ago, when I started birdwatching, I came across a principle that still guides me today. David Allen Sibley puts it this way in his seminal work: \u201eMixed flocks of birds are common\u2014and those who look closely often discover an unexpected species among the familiar ones.\u201c\u00b9.<\/p>\n

What applies to birdwatching is in truth a universal principle: those who are content with the obvious often overlook what is most valuable \u2013 the unexpected, the unique, that which can change everything.
\nEspecially today, in an era where algorithms, grids, and automated processes shape our working world, this ornithological principle is more relevant than ever. The temptation to search for standards, templates, and keywords is great\u2014whether in recruiting, team building, or employee development. But what gets lost when we only allow the familiar and the predictable?
\nNature shows us that diversity is often inconspicuous. The most valuable aspects only reveal themselves upon closer inspection. Even between species that don't seem to belong together at first glance, surprising connections emerge at certain moments. For example, when different bird species emit alarm calls together \u2013 because they understand that protection is possible across differences. It is these observations that show me what attentiveness and active engagement truly mean \u2013 a lesson that extends far beyond nature.
\nThose who take their time discover the unexpected \u2013 and learn that every individual plays a role that isn't always visible. Patience, curiosity, and respect are not empty words, but fundamental prerequisites for sustainable learning and development \u2013 in nature as well as in our interactions with one another.
\nIn the professional world, I often encounter the opposite: recruiting processes that filter by keywords instead of searching for potential. HR templates that weed out those who deviate from the norm. Impersonal rejections of people who don't fit the standard profile \u2013 even though their skills could make all the difference.
\nA look at the research is worthwhile: Daniel Goleman, psychologist and one of the world's most renowned experts on emotional intelligence, emphasizes how crucial it is to recognize and promote diversity and individuality within a company. He summarizes it as follows: "Emotionally intelligent organizations recognize that while standardization brings efficiency, it can stifle innovation."\u00b2.
\nThe value of allowing diversity is also evident in leadership culture. Bren\u00e9 Brown describes it this way: "Real leadership emerges where we allow vulnerability \u2013 including our own."\u00b3.
\nNature shows us that those who truly look see more \u2013 and grow from it. Perhaps this is the most important lesson for our time: to maintain patience and openness, to discover and cultivate what is unique \u2013 in the field, in the office, in life.
\nUltimately, our future will not depend on the efficiency of algorithms, but on the wisdom with which we shape humanity.<\/p>\n
